Awesome piece! Love the study format. Very creative and effective, because when we live in another land we are in an experiment that dramatically affects how we think about who we are and where we're from. When is your book coming out?

Quick question: A few months ago, there was a nav bar on Substack's home page that had different categories of topics. Travel was one of them. Now it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Is there still a travel section?

Thank you! I'm working on Lyric essays in my MFA this semester so I thought I might as well use them for my Substack. I noticed that the travel section was broken up into adventure and other sub-categories, but let me check again.

Turned out well!

Teaching English abroad was the best thing I could have done for my 27-year old self. I've considered returning to the profession recently - not for the teaching, but for the freedom.

I agree, it’s a life changing move. Teachers are always in demand, go for it!

Oh gosh, I _still_ misgender objects (more often their adjectives, actually) in Spanish, and I'm writing this from las Islas Canarias. 🙈

And being called "Miss." 🤢

And delivering unprepared lessons with no backup plan? ✔

Thanks for reading! I prepared lessons are a given but somehow tend to work better than the prepped ones.

It came from a student writing assignment and it’s stayed with me because it’s such a killer metaphor to illustrate life transitions.
